Default what size apes?

I have a 06 Heritage softail and I want to put some Apes on it. I sat on a bike saturday with 18" and they were too tall for me. I am right at 6 foot and I was wondering if 16" would be ok? The 18"s from saturday were pushed forward so that made it even harder to reach them easy. Thanks.

Thanks for all the response. I am looking around at 16s and hope to get some soon! If any of you know anyone that took some 16s off because they didnt like them or wanted a different size I may interested in buying them. Thanks!
