If one side of the bike looks a lot better than the other, then something has got to be done with the "other", because there's a lot of opportunity for both and the bike has to be balanced. It would drive me nuts knowing my bike had an "off" side. Not a definite answer to this thread, but that's where I'm at.

I remember when I was in my twenties I was trying to make up my mind to buy either a new sportster or a superglide and I just couldn't get past the look of the huge primary cover on the super glide , so I went with the sportster . I guess it is something that you have to get use to because today I like both sides of any Harley. Besides today there are many things that you can do with the primary to make it look great.
