Just remove the tins from the backside of the forks and they'll give you all the access you need. You'll have to loosen the bolts that hold the windshield on to slide them out. I think there's one other screw on each fork tin. Its a pretty simple ordeal, go for it!
I put my 2 1/2" risers on a couple of years ago without removing the tins, just used a long extension. But either way, not really a difficult job.
Have since added Heritage bars to those same risers. Much more comfortable.
I installed 4 1/2" risers on my 05 fatboy. Easy to do, but I haven't really found a quality product yet. I have had two sets of Kuryakyn risers and both have stripped out even with my being extra careful. If you get a quality set you will enjoy the added comfort. I have since ordered a set from J & P cycles. Hopefully they will be better!

Are you over tightening them? I'm surprised that you went through two sets
in less than a year.
I have a question on pullback's. If I put 4 1/2 , 2 1/2 pullback risers on my 2004 FatBoy, will I have to re-work the wiring and brake lines. Or will the same ones fit?
