New to forum.I recently purchased a 92 FLSTC.when moving and a turn signal is activated .it either works incinsistently or stays on for a while, but never cancels out unless I turn it off. When the bike is at a standstill and either ls
activated.it works normal .The owners manual states it is on a distance.time module.Parts catalogs lists a standard 12v type flasher ..Any help would be appreciated.dert
I believe in the 92's that there is a reed switch in the speedo that sends pulses as the bike moves so that the controller can recieve input to turn them off. The flasher usually either works or not, probably not the problem here. If you look in the service manual where there is a diagram of the speedo with it's circuits, you will see the notation for the reed switch if applicable.
Thanks. The speedo is being replaced by the dealer as the reset button was missing .The console was removed there and speedo taken out to get a part #.Something couldve not been hooked back up good or it all could all be related. The svc. manual and owners manual did mention a reed switch I will mention this to the dealer when taken for speedo install. Thanks again.
Check all your bulbs and bulb sockets. You could have some corrosion in the bulb sockets. If so, just scrape them clean with a pocket knife or rough them up with some emory paper. I think I would just replace all the bulbs since they are pretty cheap.
There is a wire that goes to the speedo(possibly gr/white) that completes the circuit for that reed switch, possible it was disconnected, this will cause this problem.
Thanks oldgeezer,Most excellent !.All suggestions are valuable and makes sense. (you too tcstd)I will have the wires checked when in for speedo replacement and will check the bulbs.sockets today. This is one of the more informative forums I have participated in .Any other suggestions pertaining to an "older" softtail will be appreciated ..by the way,how old is old ?
Dert, they are like me, they don't get old, they get seasoned! Seriously, it depends on how they've been taken care of. I've seen 20 year old bikes that look new and two year old bikes that look like rat bikes.
Removed and changed all turn signal bulbs and did find one in total corrosion and contacts were flattened ,but it did work before I changed it.Im hoping this caused the erratic operation and will find out tonight on my hill country ride .If not,I suspect it will be the reed switch or a faulty wire which will hopefully be indentfied when the new speedo is installed ,(if it
ever gets here ) ....just an FYI for all who gave suggestions ,Thanks
Hope it works OK. The automatic cancelling still may be a problem. Hey, we're just a couple of hours down the freeway in Midland. If you get out this way, give us a holler.
Good friends in Odessa. Was in Midland to escort Rolling Thunder through Abilene on their way to DC.I know the area well...You are right about the cancelling module. Will more than likely have to have it replaced..Thanks ..Next time Im out that way,Ill ping you before I leave
