Took a quick ride today without my windshield and was disappointed. The wind noise was just too loud. I was wearing a half-helmet and it seemed like the straps by my ears was causing it to be so loud. Or was it that? Now, I would be fine riding without the windshield if I wore my 3/4 helmet, but I like wearing my half-helmet. Love the looks of my ride without the windshield, but the wind noise is a pain. How can you stand the wind noise or do you just get used to it?
It's easier going from no windshield to a windshield than it is the other way around. I have a very short shield on my Roadglide and I love it. It took some getting use to. I think if a lot of the riders who bought the Street Glide would give the short windshield a chance they would like it.It's just really different the first few times you ride with one.
Wind noise has never bothered me. Although for long rides I do kinda get that "after concert deafness" thing going on. I'd suggest if it bothers you that much wear earplugs that would solve the problem and they shouldn't muffle the sound so much that would make it unsafe to ride.
My bike is just one year old 6300 miles, and there used to betimes when I really did like to feel the air straight on. But since I cut my windshied down 3.5 inches, I haven't ridden without it. The shorter windshield allows me to look over the top without having to'adjust for lexan differential,' but it still does the job of blocking the air, bugs, and occassional rain drops. Shortened windshield, half helmet, life is good.
It's all about what you are used to. I have never used a windshield. I really don't care for the bikes I have ridden with them. However, I am considering getting one for long trips. I rode 700 miles in a day once and my ears were still ringing the next day.
I always had a windshield prior to buying my harley. I haven't used my shield for my fatboy once. I just get used to it. Sometimes I listen to music with in ear earphones, sometimes I just listen to the wind. If I am taking a long trip on the highway, I usually have either music, a fullface, or both...
