Hmm...not sure how the keyless security differs on older models such as your 02 and the 03 that hspring03 has. On my Crossbones, I don't have to activate the keyless security and works just like you were told. The fob needs to be within a five foot radius of the bike or it won't even turn over. Perhaps there is a way to disable it and that is the case with yours?
Is it possible the batteries in the fob are dead? Or, the security system was disabled?
My bike flashing lights sounds the audible alarm sounds and wont start if the fob isn't within 5 feet. But mine is a 2007
Does the fob have a button on it to turn on the alarm? If so then you have to "turn on" the alarm when leaving the bike. If not turned on then you don't need the fob to turn it off again when using the bike.
The newer bikes have passive security systems. When the bike is walked away from (with the fob) the security is on all the time. There is no button to push. When the fob is brought back to near proximity to the bike, the security is turned off. I think possibly the salesman didn't know what kind of security your bike had and gave you misinformation.
How is it activated? I have a fob with my '08 and it doesn't seem to do anything.
Walk away from your bike with the key fob. If you see the turn signals flash a couple times, that means it's armed. If you dont see any flashing lights, either your fob's battery is dead, or the dealer didn't program the security system with the fob. Your owners manual will tell you how to program it. Just be sure to write the numbers down after you're done. If you dont have the manual, take it to the Dealer and they'll be happy to program it for you....
But if you do, I'd change out the battery in the FOB while you're at it.
I added an audible alarm with a portable pager system to mine. The Standard Security system doesn't come that way, so your bike probably doesn't make a sound.............but the lights should flash telling you it's working.
