I have an 08 Softail FXSTB. I was recently cut off by a vehicle this past week and laid the bike down. I am fine and there is just very minor damage (re-powder coating) to the bike.
However, I lost a quart or so of oil as a result of the oil cap being knocked out of the back when it laid down (Very low speed). I am going to change out the oil completely etc, but a I had a quick question I need help with. When I picked the bike back up, there was no scrapes/markings to the motor etc. The bottom of the primary has a very small 1.5" scrape on the bottom, but no cracks etc. Just I am 99% sure there is no motor damage etc. However, I started the bike up and it fired right over immediately, so that was a sign of relief. No knocking, no odd noises, nothing, sounded perfect. When I went to ride it home, I would give it gas it the motor would almost pause, like it was a hitting a fuel cut. I can only assume this would be the result of some sort of "Tilt" or "Tip" switch that was tripped when the bike went over. If so, where is this located, and how to I reset to normal. I have the repair manual for the bike, but am not able to locate this switch.
Ok, looking at other posts and more searching on internet. I see it may have to do with the "BAS" or Bank Angle Sensor. Not sure if I have to reset this, I have since removed the battery as I do some minor repairs to the bike. So will this reset this sensor? Or is there something I have to actually to do in order to reset it? Any other sensors that I would have to check because of this incident? Thanks
Hmmmm in the five yrs I been in here I don't even remember a back angle tip sensor being talked about.
sound like U doing the right thing, REsearch,, if U can't find out more U can always call ur dealer and talk with the service dept Mgr or a master wrench.
Thanks for the help. Ya it seems like it was some sort of a fuel cut so I couldn't rev the motor out afterwards, as a safeguard. Like I said, the motor wasn't making any funky noises and did not get whacked. This is why I was thinking I tripped some kind of sensor. Anyhow, I'll keep looking into this. I am going to change the oil out so I know that is good to go, I didn't get a low oil light or anything like that, as that was my first thought to why I was lacking some power. But, I'll work through it in the process of elimination. Any other input or suggestions is welcomed! Thanks!
of all the reading i've done around here, i never came across a tilt switch or what i would call a ford kill switch..if you still have no power, i would suggest looking at the external fuel line and make sure it didn't get crimped or crushed somehow and if that was ok, look in the tank and see if the hose is secure on the pump. may have knocked it loose where its dumping half the pressure right back into the tank.. just a thought..
Ya, I was able to ride the bike home with no issues. It was just if I threw it some throttle, it would be delayed, as if I had to let off the throttle and ease it into it. I am replacing the throttle cables, changing fluids, disconnected the battery (which I assume would reset all codes/sensors), and should see what I come up with in about a week when I can reassemble and restart the bike again. I just wasn't sure if there was a sensor that would cause similar symptoms due to the bike being laid down.
As said, I would take this question to a dealer. I don't know of any bank angle sensor but with computer command these days you never know.....glad you made it out of the ordeal in one piece.
as i understand it, the bike does have a yaw sensor, but if i understand the system correctly, its only part of the turn signal module/system. that way it knows that you made a turn and turns off the signals.
It could be the controls were jacked up too as it landed on the throttle side pretty hard. I'm swapping out new bars, controls, cables etc. So that itself, may also solve the issue. Fingers crossed.
HEY,, I learned something today and still At 62 I try to learn something everyday,, I did't know that there was a lean angle cut off--AKA (Crank-sensor)...
BUT it makes Sense....
I just did some research myself and it looks like its called the Crankshaft Sensor...
