Default My Softail Build

So I have come to realize that at the young age of 25 I am losing all my friends to this crazy thing call Marriage.... While all my friends are building families and babies I am building Harleys The only problem is I have no one to share all the pain, pleasure, and nolidge that I am experienceing.. so I decided to ramble on here.....

My builds breif back ground...I purchased her (my first Harley) over 4 years ago during college, a 1992 Softail Custom with a S&S 96 motor...

Well long story short the motor ran like a raped ape until my drunkin father decided to grenade the motor in a all-out 8,000 rpm neutral panick rev..... daaaadaaaaa daaaa wampida smash! The results are shown below (a see through piston)

Dad should not be around anything that could hurt him or anyone else if he is drinking.

...I have to admit that I have NEVER seen a piston look even remotely like that. What is the rest of the engine like, I shudder to ask?

So the motor grenade was over 1 year ago.... and within the last 2 months I finally.... started rebuilding her....

I decided to make some upgrades .... I did the irresponsible thing and got a zero interest credit card and went to town:

so to my credit card's and I's suprise our "limit" did not go so far...... I got a scoprion billet clutch, joker hand controls, Koso (small) digital speedo and more.....

The motor ended up being toast... destroyed one head, both cylinders and pistions, the valvues of the other head, wiped the cam and lifters and even the lifter housings... there was not very much salvaged.......

so after a couple nice warm days and all these parts sitting around in early spring I began to go crazy and decided I wanted to set an unrealistic goal of completing this bike on the 4th of July weekend this year.... I moved some finances around and came up with a brand new S&S 117 motor. ... unfortunately it is the big dog version that is neutered with 9:1 compression... but it will get me on the road this summer and turn into a monster next winter ....................

I only get weekends to work on the bike so it has been slow coming but here are some pictures after week two of working on her:

So I forgot to mention that I tore the whole bike down to the frame and sent several chrome parts to a sand blaster and then to the powder coater....

With my motocross background I decided to change things up a bit... here are the following purchases I have made

Duffee Powder Coating semi-gloss black: (http://www.duffeefinishing.com/)

Hand controls: Joker Machine J-Tech

Wheels: DNA 60 spoke black (have not had a very good experience with them and do NOT want to give them to much credit)

* sent the shitty powder coated DNA hubs to Anodizing Specialist http://www.anodizingspecialists.com/ for a hard coated black anodizing finish.

S&S 117 Motor with automatic decomp system

Mikuni 48mm Carb and Arleness Big Sucker Air cleaner (came with motor)

Scorpion Billet Clutch

PBI Sprockets ..... yes sprockets... I am a motocrosser I have a sportbike.. I have absolutely NO problems with a chain... (for all you anti-chain guys... have fun changing belts... haha and paying for them)

custom frontend (its a suprise... It should be on this weekend, I will show pics and post details next week)

Wild one lowering kit... to compensate for new front-end

Joker Risers

Jagg Oil cooler system (the absolute best setup PERIOD!)
http://www.jagg.com/

... I have a lot more or little things and will list latter in the build...

Believe it or not I have had an extremely adverse time customizing my bike... small things to large .. and I realize I have many more issues to come.

... one the first major issues was how much offsett to set the front sprocket because I wanted a larger rear tire......... well after calling Baker, PBI and drag directly I learned absolutley nothing except these companys are selling sprockets that they have no idea what bike they fit..... after countless ours of hdforums.com research i decided to take my best guess at what I think will work (think... it has not yet been confirmed)

I want a wider tire than a stock 130/90/16 for the pure fact that I want a lower profile sidewall.... anyways I decided to go with a Metzeler 160/60/18 (this tire sets me really close to the stock tire height but obviously will show more rim than tire)

In order to do this, my research has sent me to a PBI front sprocket that is offsett .750"

I have not yet installed this so I do not know what rear sprocket spacer i will need to line up so any input would be appreciated???
