Default Overheating issues, need your expertise please!!

Hello again,

Ok so I have an 1988 Softail FLST. The problems started a few weeks ago when I removed my cam cover to have it powdercoated. At that time I had also removed my drag pipes to paint and wrap them and I pulled the carb to clean it. I also reinstalled my pipe baffles. I noticed the problems started once I fired it up to cure the pipes.

I am getting extreme overheating and my oil tank was smoking and oil was coming out of the air cleaner. I let it run for about 20 minutes when I noticed the smoking. This is after the pipe wrap smoke had cleared. Now my question is, could I have a bad carb-to-mainfold spacer (it looked like it needed replaced but HD did not have any in stock at the time so I put it back on), a bad V.O.E.S, or bad timing?

My first thought is I put the timing sensor plate in at a different angle so I would need to reset the timing. But is there anything else that could be wrong? Is there an easy place to start my diagnosis? Thanks for your help as always it is appreciated.

I had no overheating issues until I pulled the cam cover to PC it.

Sitting and running for 20 minutes ""WILL ABSOLUTELY"" cause U motor to ""OVERHEAT"".

Its a freaking AIR COOL motor,., What did U think it would do.?????

I bought two 20'' high speed industrial fans I put on my motor to keep her cool if I need to run it over 4-5 mins or more sitting ....

If U don't have syn oils in her after U did this, I'd for sure change the oils in Ur bike cause reg dino oils will break down with the High heat temp U just put Ur motor through..

As far as what else U did by running her a long time sitting.. I don't know..
Usually when we brag about something we add more to the story.
When we mess sometimes up we subract from it.. So as far as I know U could have Idled Ur motor 1/2hr or more...

I hope u didn't really hurt anything...

If ur intake gasket is bad the Id also think the motor would run rough and lean which would make her run HOt..

Still I'd change the oils along with whatever else needs change.

15 yr old bike, it may need a lot if its not been taken care of...

On our TCs if we fill the oil tank too full or even to the top fill line its not unuasal to get oil out of the filter.

Depending on how hot the oil got it may have started to foam and could cause the same effect.

It may be better for U to go to the EVO section and ask about the timing...

Here's the link to it.

Ok well thank you for that reply. If I knew that I would not be on this forum asking for help. Still doesn’t answer my question as to why I have oil dripping from my air cleaner. It is not a lot but enough to cause some concern. I also rode it a bit after it cooled down and it was still overheating (felt like my right leg was about to combust!).

Nothing was subtracted from my post, if I left something out I won’t be able to properly diagnose the issues I am having. But thank you for the assumptions.

With the ignition timing off would it be ok to ride it to a garage? What about the oil leaking? Will a bad carb-to-manifold spacer cause overheating?

The oil out of the air filter is normal on a evo. If I fill mine more then 2 1/2 qts. It will come out of the a/c after the oil is hot and expanded.
