That's insane! You can buy new chrome 422's on ebay For another $25.00.
you're right. Actually, I should have mentioned that they were upgrading me to the 422 shocks at the same time. Considering what was re0useable from my old set, basically the springs and adjustable end, I was going to end up with a set of 422's for $370 delivered ($20 shipping roughly).
I ended up just ditching them and scored a new set of Airtails (shocks only) for $340 delivered off fleabay. I made up a mounting tab for a pair of Schrader valves, and mounted them off a tab on the frame that I think used to hold the coil cover, ran the air lines and installed the shocks. Cutting, bending and making the mounting tab out of 1/8" Aluminum sheet took longer than installing the shocks. I used a bicycle pump to pressurize the chambers in the shock, 2-3 pumps is all it took.
I'm still tinkering with the home-brew on board air compressor setup. I have the schematic and parts list all figured out, but since mounting the compressor would likely require removing the rear tire, I am going to hold off till the cold months. I have not been riding since the end of June (life getting in the way of wrenching) and don't want any more down time.
The shotgun shocks are the answer to all of your problems. Yes, they are pricey but you get what you pay for. If you did pull the trigger on them you will NEVER, EVER be sorry. My bike has had many, many mods to it and the shotguns are my favorite mod. I'm just sayin.......

I will see how the Airtails do for now. It is a big jump from the $340 I got them for vs. the $1550 for the Shotguns. I also like that if all the air stuff fails (and they eventually will), the Airtail still has a backup mechanical spring.
If I want to slam the bike for the taildragger look, I agree the Shotguns are the ticket. Right now, I just want to ride, and after riding into work this morning, I am happy with the Airtails. Now to figure out why the front end sucks so bad...
Nice Deluxe BTW, I just picked up some new take off 16x3 wire wheels, shopping for wide-whites now..
