My check engine light comes on now and then as I am driving down the road and at the sometime my speedo and Tech needles peg and bounce back to normal. The bike seems to run fine during this process. Anyone know how to pull the codes off the system? I have a repair manual but don't see anything about reading the check engine light codes. Thanks
Thanks for the acknowledgement,, I've save a bunch of info over the yrs I've been in here so I can re-post it later for others to help save them time looking for it.
GO to the no 6 post in the link above to find out how to read Ur codes...
Yeah,, Most dealers charges 1hr labor just to do this READ..
Don't get yourself all excited if you didn't buy the bike new and come up with some codes.
I just learned to find and determine the codes the other day after my security key stayed on too long and I pulled a u1097 code but I'm pretty sure its a old code so I reset all the codes and see what happens since I now know the codes the bike throws are going to be current.
A friend of mine had a similar problem. Took it to the dealer and two Indy shops. The dealer and first Indy could not find a problem, still the check engine light came on, bike ran fine. The second Indy pulled off the spark plug wires and re-seated them on the plugs. Check engine light went off and never came back on. Sometimes the problem is just that simple. May not be your issue, but it could be somthing just as simple.
I ended up replacing my speedo in about 4 mos. after that started. It finally didn't even jump.
It would be a good idea to disconnect your ECM, put some dialectric grease on the connections, and then reconnect it just in case it's vibration causing a slight temporary separation.
Sounds like the voltage regulator has given up the ghost. Check voltage at battery at about 2000rpm. Should around 14 volts +/-. Anything more is trouble. Some electrical guru in here prolly has a better answer tho.
