Side mount plate-brake clearance

Side mount plate-brake clearance
I picked up a Road 6 curved vertical plate mount for my 05' Night Train.
Getting ready to install it and I just realized (new to Harley's, please forgive me) that if I mount it on the right side it will set in much farther due to the factory offset in the swingarm...and if I modify the plate mount I can get it to set in even farther yet.
My questions to the experts are. Have any of you moved one even closer to the brake rotor? How close would you consider too close? 1/4", 1/2", 3/4"?
Just doesn't make sense to me to leave it hanging out there in the wind if it can be safely "tucked".
Thanks for any insight...and before you ask, I searched but could not find this particular side mount information. Although, it is a pretty well beat to death subject.
