I dropped my train 2" front and rear. I used the bolts out back, and the progressive full kit (not drop in) on the front. I also installed a set of Ricor Intiminators up front to smooth out the ride a bit, and provide a little better handling. Really happy with it so far, and in the 2500 miles I have put on this setup, I haven't scraped a single thing. I ride pretty hard, and even my swingarm bag is unscathed.
Monotubes up here as well! I'm not to impressed with them. For four hundred dollars I would go with the drop in instead! I lowered my front end 1 inch and shotgun in the rear. Not impressed with the tubes. Just IMO!!

Strange, that's the exact opposite of how I feel about mine. I dropped down 2" and it handles better and doesn't scrape as much even though lowered 2" from stock. I thought about the regular or drop in set up with Ricors but, decided to go this way and couldn't be happier.
If I went lower I might just drop 1" and from what I hear that can be done with the regular or the lowering Monotubes, for a few bucks less I might to the regular Momotubes.
My friend has the monotubes in her Deluxe. I can tell the difference. I like the fact that the front end doesn't dive when you brake. I just got some for my Street Glide. I am sure a Softtail will be different then a touring bike but there are a few threads in the touring section about the monotubes
The least expensive way to improve you front end is to simply change the fork oil.
SE Heavy (Not Extra Heavy) is the way to go. Then if you want a stiffer spring take a close look at Progressive Heavy Duty springs.
Lowering the front end is a different story. Some folks just use a shorter space between the spring and top bolt or they use drop in lowering kits. But with both of these methods you just lose suspension travel. If you have more than six inches of clearance between your fender and the lower triple tree you should install shorter fork tubes, and the shorter spring spacer.
