93 Heritage is extremely cold blooded. Have to drive 5 miles before I can push in choke and not have it snarl and pop like a rabid dog. Is this normal? Can I rejet carb or replace plugs with a hotter or colder?
Sounds lean for sure. It would be interesting to know what jets are in it now, where your mixture is set at and what mods are done to the motor. Mine takes a while to warm up but I kill the choke within about 10-20 seconds and use the throttle lock while warming up and the throttle to keep it going for the first mile or so. However I never get a spit or a pop no matter the situation.

Good advice.
OP how long are you letting it warm up? Can't just jump on an evo and go.
Like 2006FLST said above. Try to limit use of the choke. I use it to start and then use the throttle to keep it running. My older bike would sometimes take 5 minutes to warm up. If it's not popping after 3-5 minute later I doubt you have an issue.

Yeah this. If you are getting NO popping while riding it normally I would say you are fine. Since you just bought the bike it aint a bad idea to pull the carb and do a good cleaning and check what jets you have etc.
On my 98, I have to let it warm up 4 or 5 mins. Even on hot days, I have to pull the choke a little at first ( garage kept ). I had mine Dyno'd and it was pretty good as is. My bud's 05 has carbs, but he doesnt have to use the choke much on 1st start up.
I tried the limited use of the choke suggestion for start up only, then used the throttle lock to raise the idle with choke off for approx 5 minutes while i was tinkering in garage. The pipes turned a new shade of purple and melted some more chrome and smoked. I took it down the road and it runs like a top. No popping or snarling at all. When it cools down I'm gonna check the spark plugs. Rejetting in near future. Am I too lean? Should I tinker with idle mixture? I don't have a manual.
