I just got a set of rinehart crossbacks for my blackline. I got them in the flat black and didnt think about the heat shields being chrome. I like the look of the all black pipe and I'm assuming they would burn the crap out of me without something there right? And if I have to put one or the other on what look do you think would look the best a black wrap job on the whole pipe or try to paint the heat shield?
I dig the wrap, that's what I did to my exile shotguns. Helped cut down the heat on my leg quite a bit, not as much as shields would have, but it looks a lot better than shields.
Really just depends what look you're trying to achieve. Old Skool rat rod look, go with wrap; clean lines look, paint the shields.
I took the heat shields of my last set of pipes on my Fatboy and wrapped the pipes. You should get a bit more HP as your exhaust doesn't disipate until the end of the wrap.
Make sure to use the high temp paint first (2-3 coats: dries quick). I applied 2" wrap after soaking in water, but I think the 1" would be easier on the curves of the pipe (I got minor wrinkles, but not too noticable). Lastly, I applied the paint to the exterior wrap (don't have to, but I did).
Have had many, many compliments on the wrap. However, I just changed out to a 2 into 1 (Black with slotted shields: Hacker Exhaust Warheader). Good luck!
Awesome I think I will go with the wrap then. I will have to watch a couple you tube vids on how to do this right. Are there any kits I should stay away from or are they all pretty much the same? Once I finally get everything on and done I will post some pics.
DEI is a good kit. I have cheap stuff on my bike now and it shows. I prefer to use stainless hose clamps from home depot instead of those annoying ties that come with the kit. Just start at the end of the pipe and work toward the head end. Not to hard. Also tie one end to a bumper or pole to keep it tight and you will be good.

+1......Great tips and exactly what I did. Make sure to unravel wrap and soak in a bucket for a while to minimize stiffness. Rots-a-Ruck!!!
50'x2" of Lava wrap Titianium from Summit. Wraped dry, didn't paint. have about 8000mi on it now. Check out my photo album for pictures. Also cut my heat shields and installed where my leg is when stopped.
