Check the front master cylinder. If you can push the break lever forward and the light goes out then the internal plunger is worn out. I replaced 2 on friends bikes this year.
well, here is my story. My brake light stayed on. Sunday, I done as others have said to spray wd-40 to the front brake light switch and master cylinder to clean and lube. I checked it Monday and the brake light still stayed on. I called dealership to come and pick it up this morning and right before the driver pulls up up I turned the key on and the brake light was out. I checked it again and worked both front and foot pedal and it is still working like it is suppose to. I guess I should have let it set for a couple of days and then checked it. Haha.
That doesn't mean it's fixed. Mine used to blink right along with the engine idle. It was the switch on the brake handle. Well, got that fixed and a few months later my brake light started staying on intermittently. This time it was the switch on the brake peddle. Just because it ok now, doesn't mean it will be in a week..
I typically build a little bubble of JB Weld on the brake lever at the spot where it contacts the front brake switch. This will fill the void keeping the switch pressed in and the brake light off when it is supposed to be. Sometimes the brake switch keeper in the switch housing isn't tight against the back of the switch letting it slide back into the housing a bit causing the light to turn on. Check to make sure the switch is properly mounted in the housing and go from there. I like the idea of the anti-theft sticker. I have used thick foam two sided tape before while in a pinch but it didn't last long before coming off...

Sounds like the piston in the master cylinder is sticking. Get yourself a repair kit and give it a service,
I have a 2008 softail heritage with a brake light problem. With the ignition on or while riding, the brake light stays on. Any ideas?
The correct answer is you need the master cylinder rebuilt. You're supposed to flush the brake system out yearly but it's probably the most neglected item on the bike. That WD40 is only a quick fix. If you're handy around the shop you can do it, just grab a kit at the local indy for $20. The other inexpensive route would be pull the master cyclinder and head to the local indy for a rebuild, 20 mins later and probably $30-40. Last would be the friggin stealer
I just want to let everyone know that I got a rebuilt kit for the master cyclinder and found that it was in need of the plunger replacement. I also changed out the brake switch too. The switch was broken and now everything is in great working order. Now I don't have to wonder if brake light staying on!!
