The PV flashes the ECM as well, and is not a piggy back unit. I have two different maps (one performance and one for better fuel economy) and I can flash the ECM in less than 30 seconds.
When I was looking at tuners, I was told that SERT would only tune within EPA standards. Is that true?
Yea... part of me wishes I had bought the PV instead of the PCIII because I like the idea of not having the piggy back system and being able to flash the system whenever I wanted too. Oh well...maybe next year.
The only problem I had with the SERT was that once you use it it "marries" the ECU and can never be used on any other bike. At least, that's the way it used to work and I don't know that HD has changed that.
The Power Commander can be used on any number of bikes, and can also be sold to another rider if you switch bike models. Not so the SERT.
Sert will tune to whatever the tuner chooses as values. They aren't EPA compliant. The stage 1 dealer download tune is generic and EPA approved however it's absurd to believe that a sert won't let you input different values. How would the sert even know if the values inputted are even smog approved.
So to answer the question NO. A sert has no idea whether or not the settings are EPA approved or not.
Look at it this way. I buy a sert but I've got a 107. Now for a 103 certain values = x amount of exhaust but if it's adjusting a 107 those values are meaningless. The sert doesn't know what engine it's tuning. It just knows that it's going to upload a program onto a hard drive(ecu).
I went the SERT route after trying to jam the PC-V under my seat. It is tight under there and I was not comfortable moving the ECM and velco'ing it in place (per the instructions). On the Fatboy it plugs into the the main harness running into the ECM. That is a big fat connector and it takes up a lot of room.
I am not bashing the PC-V as I had one on my DL1000. The PC-V simply plugged into the MAF sensor circuit, a piece of cake.
