Stage 1
Thinking about getting a stage 1 done on my 2012 Heritage and was looking for some advice. I already have 2" Rush slipons and a Xied on my bike now. Stopped at the dealer today to see what a stage 1 would cost. He recomended the SERT because it doesn't have to stay on the bike. Also recomended some type of SE air cleaner. The kicker was the price for this. He quoted me right at $1,000, does this seem right since I already have pipes? Is the SERT the way to go? Any advice will be appreciated even if there is something I am missing. Thanks
Ouch!!
Way to much money for that.
Check out Fulemoto, they are a sponsor here on HD forums.
They have a great deal on the Power Commander V and the the Fuel Moto Pro Billet Air Cleaner. The Power Commander V is $299 and the Fuel Moto Pro Billet Air Cleaner is $129.
So you would be getting the whole thing for around $428.00 and with the Pow Com V you can tune your bike later on when you do more upgrdes to it.

If you just want to add an AC, you could order the Big Sucker and PC III from FuelMoto for probably about $300 and they will map it for you. You just install it and ride.
Not sure on your warranty question. I have a feeling that is more dependent on the dealer you have than any HD guidelines.
I sort of just went through this process myself. The SERT is a good tool. BUT it limits you in a sense IMO. It would tune and do what you need for what you are planning. But you could find yourself in the future doing other mods that the SERT would be able to get you close to the right settings but perhaps not exactly where you would want to be.
As stated earlier... I would contact FuelMoto. These guys are GREAT! You could go with the Power vision or the PC-V. In my own case I went with a PC-V with Autotune. It is a super slick system, easy to learn how to "play with it" via a laptop, and eliminates the need (in essence) of a dyno tune. You load the PC-V with a base map made for your mods. Then the AT reads the desired A/F ratio from the PC-V and makes fuel trims as you ride. After a while you plug everything up to the laptop and accept the fuel trims into the base map. Doing this a few time keeps making the map more and more accurate to your bike, mods, and driving style. FuelMoto has compared the tables that resulted from an AT bike with that of a Dyno'd bike and have reported that it is very accurate and they were very impressed.
Anyway, enough with the sales pitch... I am just happy with the results. It puts you in total control. You can program things all sorts of ways. IMO the only "downside" to my setup is 1. having a laptop makes it much easier, and 2. more electronic junk on the bike to go wrong.

I have the SERT on my Bike. Bought it when I had the Stage 1 done. When I had my Stage 4 done I used the same SERT. They are not cheap but if you need your Dyno'd again it's only $100. You can buy the software to mess with the SERT and tune it yourself but I can't be bothered cause my bike runs great.
I think SERT goes for $450 ish and the SE Heavy Breather goes for $300 and your dealer is charging the other $250 for Install and Dyno'ing the bike ? Sounds about right to me. Lots of guys use the SERT here. Your just getting a lot of people chimining in on cheaper alternatives.

The issue is they Cost more and most in here always look for the less costly unit.
The son and I have used the SE tuners on the last 4 Harelys we've owned.
The secret to save money is to do all Ur motor mods at the same time.
STG`1 and Cams, then U don't have to keep paying to tune it all the time.
If Ur one that changes cams and pipes every yr, then No a Self tuning tuner would be better;
But if U do it all at once and keep the same mods. Then U'll be happy with one.
IMO the SERT is most trouble free way to go, because its not just a map someone installed on a piggy back unit that tricks Ur ECM.
The SERT/SEPST tuners actually changes Ur ECM settings to Ur motor. so U don't have to stick that extra box somewhere or have to worry about it going bad.
There are a lot of other tuners U can buy and use now..
I just happen to want one that tunes better than most and I don't have to tweak all the time. I want to ride not work on tuning it.
For the son and I, we feel the SE tuners do and have done that perfectly, since we've never had a problem or issue with any one of them in the last 6yrs

When I was looking at tuners, I was told that SERT would only tune within EPA standards. Is that true?
