Cam Install
Question when doing a cam install on my 2006 fxst do I need a special tool for installing cams into the support plate. I think on the 07 up motors you don't. What is the difference?
you have to press the old cams out and the new cams in. also, you will need a puller for the cam bearings.
don't waste your money on trying to press them yourself. I took my mine into the dealer, the service manager did it for free.
get a bling hole puller from autozone loan a tool program, free.
use old cams to tap in the new bearings.

No! Do NOT do that! The new bearings need to be countersunk several hundredths/inch and only a proper bearing install tool will do that for you AND insure that the bearing goes in straight.
There is a special tool to remove and install the bearings. Meny people do with out but take the chance of dropping bearing pieces into the cases wich is bad and the new bearings should be set in about 20 thousents deep wich I can't set with a hammer and u only get one chance. When I did mine I found the tools on eBay for a reasonable price compared to buying the tools from the dealer. You can install the cams into the support plate your self too all u need is a press and a socket that is about the same size as your cams and some patience.
you still need to press out the old cams and if you are going to reuse the inner chain. try to reinstall the chains in the same direction they came out.You won't destroy the bearing by using a blind hole puller. Remember to use lots of assembly lube.
blah, blah, blah, just gauge them and be careful, don't use a BFH to tap them in. you don't want to bottom them out. by the way the bearings are installed countersunk. But, I agree the proper tool is always better, however not always needed.
