Question Electrical pros....within... Tail light wiring

Help! I searched and can't find the answer.

I am installing an LED brake light. I'm going to use the stock circuit board to distribute all the wiring. The new tail light (Rick Doss p/n 2010-0730 ) has 3 wires and came with no instructions:

1 Red going inside the lamp housing
1 Black going inside the lamp housing
1 Black that looks like it attaches to the brass outside housing.

The stock wiring has 3 wires also:

1 Blue - Tailight
1 Red/Yellow - Brake light
1 Black - GND

How do I splice the new tail light into the original wiring for proper function?

Thanks in advance for any help!

What brand is the light you are installing?

Are you not able to just splice the your old tail light plug to the new light? If so I would guess it's:

Red to Blue
Black to Red/Yellow
Ground to Ground

use a battery to check the new taillight circuits. The outside black wire will be ground, the red and black going into the tallight will be the run and brake circuits.

Mentioned that above.

P/N 2010-0730 shown here:

I paid $90.00 for it...not $124.

That's what I'm trying to do...clip the old bulb holder and reuse the connector to the distribution circuit board.

Yep...that's what I did last night. I was just afraid to blow something.

I touched the gnd lead to batt neg and the other black wire to batt pos...tail light lit up. Then touched the red wire to batt pos and the it got brighter.

So.....if anyone else ever runs into this:

Stock red/Yellow wire to LED light red wire
Stock blue wire to LED light black wire
Stock black wire to LED light housing black wire (This is GND).

I'm going to have the plate bracket powder coated black and then I'm going to silicone or epoxy the OEM distribution circuit board to the back of it...that way everything plugs in nice and clean. I've already test fit everything and it looks awesome. No more "zit" tail light sticking out of the fender with tons of dead space on each side. This tail light mostly fills up the opening from edge to edge and does not protrude out past the bobtail.

I'll take pics and post when all done.

Thanks for the tips gents!

Did you have to remove the black rubber strip across the top of the light? I couldn't get it to fit with it on. Removed mine and the light fits perfect.

The only issue I have now is the black wire that runs into the LED board is loose. If you move the wire the light cuts out. I'm not sure how to fix it but I'm going to have to tear it open when I have time.

On a good note though this light looks killer in the rear fender! Oh and I decided not to use the circuit board that harley had installed. I cut it out and just wired everything direct.

Yes...the rubber strip had to go. Not sure why it's there anyway, the bracket does not rub on the fender. It fits just right without it.

Here are some pics of mine.

Nice pictures. Looks good too.

I'm going to remove mine tonight and disassemble the housing and see if I can fix the wire that keeps cutting in and out.

I thought about keeping the factory harness and circuit board but in the end I figured it would be easier to just wire directly. I might consider using it though sometime in the future.

That's funny...I was the complete opposite. I figured I'd just use the circuit board so i didn't have to do a bunch of splicing.

I do have an idea for a "splash" guard to keep water from hitting the wiring. Though I don't really ride in the rain.

Yeah I thought about a splash guard as well. and attaching it with military grade velcro. That way you can remove it from the bottom of the board when you need to gain access.

Considering that I'm going to remove the tail light I might put the board back in...it would make removing the light fixture easier in the future.
