Default Floor board question

I have a 2012 Deluxe with stock floorboards. I have just noticed that they apprear to be a bit loose, they will move from side to side. The part that is moving is what I would call the top plate. My first thought would be that you could tighten them from the bottom but that doesn't appear to be the case. Are the screws underneath the rubber pad that screw into into the bottom bracket? If so, once I pull up the rubber pad do you think I will be able to reuse it, if so, what kind of glue would I use, I assume they are glued in place???

You do know they are supposed to float there right? They are designed that way to help keep vibration to a minimum.

The boards inserts are held to the board BY that little rubber piece...you can buy replacements for them if you have one break.

Interesting, to be quite honest no I didn't know they were made to float. Now that I do know that, it makes sense. It seems odd that I just know noticed the movement, I have put 2K miles on it. Oh well, I will keep an eye on them to make sure they don't get too loose. I appreciate your replies.

LOL, I did a double take on it the first time I found it too. It was the first time I got down there to polish up the chrome on them. One of the reasons polishing up the chrome doesn't bother me is that I get a chance to check it over close when I do. We'll see if I feel the same after the weather hits. (I plan to ride rain or shine)

Yandeltxq:

I have an 07 Deluxe. I do not know if HD corrected a problem they had with Deluxe floorboards coming loose by MY 2012, but 07 Deluxes and other years have a design defect...

The rubber Nuba at the bottom of the floorboards were a little too small. Therefore, and accidental upward brush by a boot and the boards came loose. Mine did. That could be a disaster at highway or freeway speeds.

So, I used some 3M heavy duty car interior spray glue to secure my boards. I have not had a problem for over 3 months now.

Yes, the boards are designed to float. No, they should never pivot from side to side. My advice would be to check your nubs on the bottom of the boards periodically to make sure they are all pulled though the bottom plate completely.

I agree with Mike. They float, but not something where you would be able to notice too much. It is hard for us to gauge the extent of floating you are talking about, but if it is a lot or excessive, sounds to me that you should get underneath and take a look and if the rubber mounts are loose... fix. The floating should come from the weight of foot and rubber stretching. Shouldn't have a slippery feel on them. They would be able to move, but it should feel solid and you can only really tell if you look as you put pressure and move.

I must have some sort of issue, the chrome plate that the rubber piece sits on can move as much as 3/4 of a inch side to side, easily by hand. the front of the board seems solid, the sideways movement is coming from the back. I will swing my the Harley place today and pick up a service manual/book and inquire about it.
