I have an '07 Deuce and for reasons unknown it wont start.
I have a F.I.N. alarm system fitted
Sequence of events are as follows
1. Went to start the bike and it wouldnt crank. Made a sound as though it
wasnt getting enough juice from the battery to crank it.
2. While trying to start it, smoke appeared from under the seat towards
the tank.
3. Removing the seat the negative wire from the F.I.N. alarm system to
the battery was cooked.
4. I disconnected the battery and removed the alarm system entirely.
5. Still will not crank and makes a "clicking" sound when I try to start it.
6. I always have it connected to a slow trickle Battery tender when not in use but now it appears to not hold a charge.
7. The security alarm system appears to be permantly on.
I have disconected the battery and taken it out.
I am wondering...
1. Is a replacement battery in order to fix my problem?
2. Is it common for a battery to die with no warning?
3. What would have caused the F.I.N. to self combust?
Gotcha...just looked it up. Very cool alarm. When you removed your battery was all connections tight? It does sound like a dead battery to me, the question is what caused the current draw that smoked the wire for your alarm. As far as the battery dying with no warning, it would make sense to me that a battery would give no warning if a tender is used all the time. I'm assuming the alarm install was not recent. I would definitely start with a battery.
Also, from reading the alarm companies website it sounds like the alarm is meant to disable the bike if the battery is disconnected...perhaps if the battery is super low it would consider it disconnected. It does say that the alarm should have notified you that your battery was low.
My bro-in-Law tested the battery and it has no life when it pulls some power. I am going to order and Intersate tomorrow and see how that goes.
We kinda think that a wire from the battery to the F.I.N. alarm shorted out and that blew the battery.
I went to start it and there was no life in the battery and smoke appeared from under the seat. It made a "whir-r-r ....click click click" sound as if the juice was out of the battery.
Disconnecting and removing the alarm and trickle charging the battery has made no improvement.
In fact even the internal security (the key in the dash) flashes constantly even with the key fob. We tend to think that there is not even enough juice to turn the alam off.
I will get a new battery and report my findings.
Thanks so much to all for your help and advice.
Kindest regards
Foxbrow
I would be suspicious that the battery had a poor ground and the alarm system was the ground path for starting, smoking it's wires. When you put in the new battery I would be checking all of the cranking leads and ground cables to make sure they are in good shape.
