hi all
I just triked my softail springer and the people who triked it out are no help, would never recommend them again. but heres my problem my front end shimmeys uncontrolably in 1st and 2nd gear. a manufacturer in seatle suggested that I retorque the front bearings to 20 ft/lbs has anyone come across this problem and or does any one have any suggestions.
With the added weight on the steering head bearings, I would start with their suggestions. Also, a simple check of the tire pressure might be in order.
I just triked my Crossbones and I experience minor shimmys when I run over road irregularities. It's not too bad, just have to keep a good grip on the bars. I built a 69 Shovel rigid framed trike a couple of years ago and had terrible low speed wobble, made it especially exciting when jockey shifting with only 1 hand on the bars. It's due to trail issues with the front end; most trikes need raked trees to correct steering irregularities.
I'm going to eventually trike a Vulcan Engineering raked springer stem kit to see if it helps.
Scott is correct.
Trike's that are ground up builds use a different rake/trail setup that a two wheeler specifically for that reason.
Your bike may just need a different set of trees to totally eliminate the problem.
Try looking up what the rake//trail is on a Triglide for starters and compare it to the specs on your bike to see if you can change yours to match.
Another option might be to check with a front end maker to see if they have a way to fix your problem.
PS Getting a steering dampener for it might not be a bad idea either.
Even with the right setup you might still have minor issues.
He's right, raked triple trees and steering dampeners fix steering issues on almost all trike conversions. The problem with the OP's bike is that it is a factory springer. There are no off the shelf steering dampeners. Since the springer doesn't have traditional triple trees the only options are a 4.5 or a 7.5 raked stem kit from Vulcan Engineering or sending his front end to Liberty Sidecars for their 5.0 rake machining job.
