I have seen softails built with a sportster front end instead of a wide glide. I don't think they are particulary attractive so I didn't pay any particular attention to them and I don't recall what years they were. I believe, but am not positive, that the stem and bearings are the same as far as the triple tree goes. I can't say as to whether the frame cups will be the same. The best way to find out is go to a dealer and look up the parts for each year and model involved and figure out what the neck differences, if any, might be.

get out there, ride the thing and find out. It's a motorcycle, not a high performance jet or a spacecraft. Just use a little caution starting out.

The springs might be softer which will affect the ride and handling if they are. I'd say your safe though.
