I have an 06 Fat Boy with V and H sort shot staggered, S/E heavy breather kit using a P.C.III. Well, went to my local indy in which they do have a good reputation to upgrade to get more HP. Most of you know any type of engine upgrade is no chump change. After he gave me the low down on the est. price, I was expecting it to be high but WOW. Anyway, he did tell me I had to change my exhaust. That's when I got taken back when he said to get most of the HP from the upgrade, I would have to change it. That's another $800 or more. He said V and H exhaust are normally NOT used for upgrading to get more HP. So my question is, what exhaust do most poeple use for upgrades? Or, am I just getting screwed...Sorry for the long thread...I just need replies before I get into this upgrade...Thanks...
All depends on what kind of power you're looking for. The Short Shots are not the best for making big power. A good 2-1 is much better for this. Since you haven't specified what you're after, or what your indy suggested, its kind of difficult to give advice. If you like the Short Shots, keep them. Are you going to do a big bore kit, or just cams? Are you after top end race power or low end cruise power? There is a "sticky" at the top of this section that will give you all kinds of info on what the guys in here have done to their engines to get the power they wanted and the combos it took to get their. Let us know what you're after, and we can help you spend your $$$$
Thanks MachinistMate for replying. Want to upgrade to the 95 or 98 inch big bore kit. Well, I went back to my indy to talk about the big bore upgrade for my TC 88. I told him I was concerned about the exhaust I have now. He said I can still do the upgrade with my pipes but he said I will benefit much more with a 2 into 1 performance exhaust. Even if I just do cams. The more he explained it to me the more I understood. He mentioned V and H, D and D, and a few more. I always like to hear feedback from this forum on advice and experiences. So, please, all feedback is welcomed. Which 2 into 1 exhaust are you guys running for performance? Or did I just open a can of worms question. Thanks again...
Any 2 into 1 would be my recommendation with a big bore kit as well. The short shots are so short that they do not really scavenge the exhaust well. Even a longer Vance and hines like the big shot longs will give better power than the short shots. A buddy has the big shot longs with a 95" kit and 203 cams on his 05 fatboy and the bike pulls very nicely.
Any brand 2 into 1 will give great numbers but feel is more important than numbers in my opinion. A lot of people get stuck chasing a particular number. My advice is to chase a bike that has great power and rides great. You will definitely notice a nice difference with a 95" kit, cams and a 2 into 1 pipe.
