Default need some cam advice

About to buy cams for my 01 fxst 88". Approx 47k miles. Its a stock bike with 2-1 drag pipes. No other performance mods. I have read alot and found different opinions but cant find one exactly for my bike. I have found a really good deal on a set of S&S 510 gear drive cams. Just dont know if those will be right for me. I also want to know exactly what I need to buy to complete the job. i am going to install new inner cam bearings (Torrington) and replace the lifters(just with stock HD ones). I want to buy it seperately because I think the kits have more than I actually need. Anything else that should be replaced while I'm in there? Opinions are appreciated

Have you had crankshaft runout checked? With the miles you have I would guess that it would be way out of spec for gear drive cams.

Sorry

No I haven't. What do you mean 'out of spec'? And is that not something that can be fixed or put back in spec? Thanks

nyone have input on those 510G cams? I am not planning on moving up to a 95" ever, and do most of my riding around the 3000-5500 range. Thanks

I see what you mean. Well that makes it more complicated I guess... I wouldnt even know where/how to begin to check if that was "true".

You need to take your bike to a dealer or indy to have crank runout checked. It's something that absolutely HAS to be done before even considering geared cams on your bike. If it were my choice, I'd just run regular chain-drive cams (which is what I'm doing). Gear drives have better throttle response and you don't need to worry about chain tensioner shoes, yes, but I personally wouldn't want to bother with the crank runout thing and gear drives can be noisy...

It would be easier and cheaper to stick with chain drive cams and just replace the tensioners with the newer hydraulic versions. You can get any lift you desire with chain drive.
