Default cam tensioner

Had to change out the cam cover gasket due to a small a leak and discovered that my outer tensioner was almost shot. I inspected the rear one with a small mirror and light but found no appreciable wear. I'm just going toi replace the outer one and inspect in another 20,000 miles.

Bike:
2001 FXST
95" big bore kit
Unknown aftermarket cam (believe to be SE 203)
16,8xx miles.

Not sure of your mileage,
I have had a Disaster issue here
https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...r-averted.html
Developed on my Engine at around 34K or so.. but my Engine was stock.

I went with Andress 37N and Hydraulic Cam conversion kit. the rest of my Engine is still stock.

Keep a close Eye on the rear one, the photos do not show your 'mirror' view, but I trust you took good look at it.

Another thing is to bust open a used Oil filter and look for 'orange' pieces in it, if you find them, it is the sign of danger.

These things go out quick, without warning and mostly mean complete bottom end replacement and it is not cheap .

Hmmm, seems like in my reading the rear usually wears out faster and sooner than the front.

Maybe when the cams was done the only replaced the rear one????

Mileage us in the first post. I had to remove the liters and pushrods to time the cams (were out of time) so now I'm going to change out the rear one too since ill have it completely tore apart.

Man that's some fast wear. I'm glad they went to the hydraulic tensioners. I want to change my cams in the winter.... at 50K+, I wonder if they'll be worn enough to replace.

I went ahead an removed the cam plate to change out the rear tensioner, it had about 10-15% wear on it. Whoever did the cam install probably replaced it and left the primary shoe alone. On a good note I found out that the cams are Andrews TW37B, I'm pretty stoked about that.
