do a search on the site. Seems like I have heard something like this before on this forum, but I am old and I drink. Not trying to be an ***, but that's all I got--short of the pull console off the tank and check it out. Keep in mind it's a fuel tank and full of fumes. Bad things can happen without appropriate precautions.
The grey flakes you're seeing is the tank liner deteriorating. I would recommend draining the tank, removing the access plate, and inspecting the severity of the problem. If it's marginal, flush the tank and replace your fuel filter often. If the severity is major, coat the tank with a new liner. You can find tank liner kits on J&P.
I'm replaceing my petcock and noticed grey paint chips in my tank. I assume its a coating of some kind. Does anyone know what i should do from here?
Grey liner in tank.
I had an issue were a big piece of liner got loose and it was large enough starve the bike of fuel. It was a fuel injected bike and it had me scratching my head for a couple of rides.
I opened the fuel tank plate on top and then it was very easy to find and remove. I syphoned the fuel and passed it thru a coffee filter and refilled tank doing the same each time. Stuck hand in and checked then got a wood stick and moved it around touching as many parts as possible but everything else was good. Piece was from center, bottom of tank by fuel pump. 1998 road king Fuel injected.
