Default Storing unused wheels.

Hey guys,

I've changed the wheels on my bike and kept the original wheels with tyres still fitted and wondered whats the best way to store them?
Any hints or tips appreciated.
Thanks.

Default storing unused wheels

Sweet looking scoot ya have there. I store mine flat on the concrete basement floor with a sheet of plastic underneath as a moisture barrier.

Ebay is best way. Think about it, when it looks like yours, why keep old wheels? Maybe original exhaust or filter systems since new owner may need or want that some day when you move on to something new..if you must the fridge..extends tire self life by 5 years.

I don't store ANY parts of value in the garage or outside shed. If it has true value, it gets stored somewhere in the house. Maybe a closet, under a bed, under the stairs that lead to the basement. Temp controlled environments are what keep parts in perfect condition.

My stockers went in the attic. Not so temperature controlled, but it is better than the crawl space and I have never had issues with parts stored in the attic.

The Ebay idea is a good one, but custom parts are worth more off the bike (or car) during a sale .... it is rare to get back more than 20% in modifications sometimes even much less. I like to keep stock parts in favor of a de-mod when I sell.

... just my $0.02.

How long of storage?

If kept in storage for an extended period and not preserved the rubber will rot away and the wheel components can rust/corrode.

If you want to keep them for long periods, your bike tires are only good for around 6-7 years, you will need to "Preserve" them, a good tire preservative helps and if stored mounted to the wheel you will need to keep the tire pressure up to specs and storing them flat or upright will, over time, cause the tire to get deformed, do to the tire sitting in the same position, so you will need to rotate them every month, we store aircraft wheel assemblies in the upright position, inflated to spec and rotate them to a new upright position so that the same spot on the tire is not on the ground all the time which will cause a flat spot on the tire and vibration when the wheel is mounted to the aircraft and rotated during aircraft movement.
It is better to just sell them and put that money towards other items for the bike, A Shotgun Shock air suspension system maybe, I know a cheap shot at making a sale for JD hehe.

I also agree with 2 guys here that replied. My 1st choice of storing them would be to sell them and let someone else worry about it, take that money and use it elsewhere. My 2nd choice would be anywhere that is climate controled. I am not sold on this "nitrogen" deal you sometimes hear people talking about when they ride. I don't see it but I do see nitrogen rather than air when stored or just laying around. Air can draw moisture to it as where nitrogen won't. Thats just my $0.02 on the matter!!!

Thanks.
I have a special storage facility set up here in Texas....send them and 100.00usd to me and we will make sure they are cared for up to 10 years...

Or you could just hang them on a wall somewhere and not worry about it.
