Default Clutch issue

Ok, here is the story. I swapped out my SE race clutch for my stock unit. I installed and adjusted as per the manual. I have only about the thickness of a nickel between the fuerrel of the cable and clutch lever. I fired it up to see how close I was to being able to find neutral and the distance from the grip to the friction zone. Pulled in the clutch shifted into 1st, and the bike lept forward like there was no clutch at all. I double checked the install and the adjusting of the clutch. Any ideas of what I did wrong and how to fix would be greatly appreciated.

When adjusting the clutch pack, first ensure that is bike is cold. Turn the adjuster screw all the way in and compress the clutch pack. This is not stated in the service manual. Back the adjuster screw out and then follow the service manual instructions. The manual states that once the adjuster is lightly seated back it out 1/2 to 1 full turn. This 1/2 to 1 turn range changes the friction zone location.

It sounds to me is if your adjuster screw is backed out to far. Additionally the free play in your cable could be a bit much. Book states 1/16th of an inch.

Just to diagnose, you could take all the slack out of the clutch cable, and see if it releases then.
It's also possible that the clutch plates are just stuck together. Happens sometimes when a bike has been sitting for a while, or when re-installing used plates that have been sitting for a while, until they get a fresh coating of oil.
