Default Clutch Problems

Ok guys so I just purchased my first bike an 03 softail standard fi and I was riding around and all of a sudden I had no tension on the clutch cable and I could move the lever back and forth with no effort. I drained the transmission fluid popped off the cover where the clutch cable leads to and found this in the bottom of the cover folded up, any ideas or suggestions? Thanks guys.

Looks like a bearing cage to me. Not good.

Before going through more trouble than you have to, take the part to the dealer and they should be able to formally identify it for you. Knowing that, they can then advise you of the repairs difficulty. You can then determine if it is within your capabilities.

You may also want to take pictures.

A bit off the subject, but you should purchase both the Harley Service and Parts manuals.

+1 on the manuals. its a bearing cage from either the main shaft or counter shaft. nothing else like that on that side of the trans. 6 bolts and that cover comes off. should be obvious from there. steve

I did take the cover off, the transmission oil was like sludge and a substantial amount of metal on the magnetic plug but no obvious sign of placement where that bearing cage came from..I'm going to have to consult to my dealer about it.

That stinks, bro. See if you can find a independent shop in your area to take a look at it. Dealers are usually more expensive and some of the techs are just that-techs, not mechanics. How many miles on it?

I'm going to do that instead, 20k on the bike fuel injection and the 95" kit were installed at the time of purchase. The previous owner hadn't drove it in over a year and sat in his shed so there was bound for something to happen.

Looks like what's left of your throwout bearing
