Getting noticed
A few simple rules:
1. Ride faster than traffic
2. Never hang next to any vehicle, either pass or fall behind if need be
3. Every vehicle at every intersection is going to cut you off
4. Expect every vehicle to change lanes right in front of you, see #2
5. That car approaching behind you at a light will rear end you. Leave a little space and watch him in your mirrors.
6. Your throttle will get you out of more situations safely than your brakes ever will.
I have a question:
When stopping at a red light intending on going straight, which lane and lane position is safest? (from being rear-ended?)
I thought about doing that on occasion. But careful now. You're in New York and New Yorkers are, well, ... nevermind.
So how's the Island doing? I'm from Westbury living in Texas now. I have family and friends in Roslyn, Huntington and Massapequa. I moved away when I left for undergrad in 1978 and I haven't been back in years.
Ride safe, brother.

I prefer the left lane. I also like to ride faster than traffic flow for one thing. When I first started riding I was tentative. So I went slow in right lane. I let the car in the left lane proceed ahead of me, when the light changed, and was congratulating myself on what a great job I was doing on staying out of her blind spot. Then she cuts me off, without signaling. Steps on brakes, THEN signals right 2' before turning right into gas station.
Right then I decided to be in the left lane, even though it gives you less time to react to left turners. It has worked well for me so far.
I live in WI, which has way too many, distracted drivers. OP is on LI, which has to be one of the highest concentration of self- absorbed, axxholes. I know because I grew up in Valley Stream, and my Mom still lives there.
I probably wouldn't ride a motorcycle there,
as I would probably get hit or shoot some lane-weaving kamikaze in his Lexus, Porshe, Pimped out SUV, etc...
Crazy out there.

It has nothing to do with safety. What does your post have to do with safety????????????
