Default Axle Order?

I'm putting my bike back together but forgot the exact order for the rear axle, spacers, etc. I've searched but came up with nothing. Any help is appreciated.

The spacers fill the gaps. Do you not know which one is left vs. right?

I know what spacers are used for... My question is what order do the spacers, washers, bolts go in.

On my 2009 the spacers go as follows:

On the left side: Frame, largest spacer, belt sprocket

On the right side:

Frame, smallest spacer, bracket rear brake, 2nd largest spacer, wheel.

Bit of a hassle to get it all lined up so you can push the axle through.

Original the axle goes in from the right side and nut goes on the left side. But people have changed that to facilitate removal of the wheel without having to mess with the exhaust.

Rakthi, thanks for the response. I added some pics of my situation. I'm thinking the local indy shop had to add an extra washer or 2 when installing the new rear rim. Any help is appreciated!

Left Side - no room for last nut or spacer.

Right Side - its hard to tell in the pic but there is no spacer between the brake and frame. That gap just doesn't look right...

last nut & spacer

Right now I have 4 spacers, 1 washer, last nut. 2 of the spacers are the ones with the cut outs, 1 spacer kinda longer, 1 smaller spacer.

Here is the diagram for the stock wheel and spacer setup:

Axle Order?-qzssory.png

I noticed you said you had to install a new rim. That means that the spacers can be totally different than stock because the wheel may not be the same size, so it is hard to tell you exactly how it is setup. Those washers with the cutout in them go with the axle adjuster like you have on the right side. Not sure what that washer is doing on the left side there.

Worst case scenario, you'll have to take some time to experiment how the spacers go to make sure the caliper and belt are aligned properly.

Do not forget which side the v-notch faces. Sure you have caliper sitting in the lock. Make sure you do not shear off the anti rattle rubber bumper in the caliper arm. Your caliper side spacer looks a little thin for a Softail but I guess year and wheels vary.

Scuba, thanks for the pic. Those are all the parts I have so that tells me all my parts are stock. Can you tell me where the frame & brake sits in that diagram so I know exactly where the last washer sits?

Thanks for all the help!

Here's another thing I found: http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J02502.pdf.

Figure 5 does a real good job showing the order since it is a proper exploded diagram. Let me know if you can't open this and I'll grab you a screen shot. The only thing is the caliper goes on the inside of the swingarm. For some reason it shows it on the outside.

i'm pretty sure the caliper is supposed to be up against the swing arm. something does'nt look right. different wheel usually means spacing needs to be addressed PROPERLY !. what is the wheel off of?..steve
