Cool Changing Night train bars

Hey guys
Bought some new bars for my 09 night train and I'm not sure if I need to remove the tank to install.Being that the wiring goes inside these bars and when I removed the controls found the wires don't unplug at the grip end, they are sealed in the switches. Not sure if they unplug at the other end or weather I should cut and install plugs.Anybody out there done this conversion?

Whoa man no need to cut all those wires! It is easier to drain and remove the tank, although not totally necessary, but def a whole lot easier. Those wires all run to connectors that are under the tank. Lay down and look up under the left side of your tank and you'll see the connectors on the backbone of the frame. Connectors will be for your bar wiring and also for your turn signals and headlight.

Some people just loosen the tank and lift it up a little to pull those connectors apart. Once you unplug the connectors, the wires can be removed from them and then pulled back through the bars. Then obviously it all goes back through the bars in reverse order

It's not hard. There are plenty of threads on here that detail how to do it. Just get a service manual, take lots of pictures as you go to refer back to, and take your time

And if you get in a jam, drop in the Night Train picture thread. Most of us over there have made the switch.

You are going to want to pull that tank. Its pretty easy to do if you have not done it. I have had to take my tank off like three times. I just changed my drags out for a set of apes so if you get stuck let me know.

Much better idea to remove the tank. That way you'll avoid potential tank paint damage. You'll then have all the wiring connectors at your finger tips. The connectors are called Deutsch connectors. You can easily dismantle the Deutsch connectors and buy new wire pin ends for them at HD. $12 bucks. I bought a crimp tool at Fry's Electronics for $9 bucks. I just did this. I was going to taller bars, which meant adding a wire extension kit or changing to a new set of switches. I went to a new set of chrome switches.
Of course you can alway cut, splice and solder. Lots of guys do it this way.

Good Luck!

Warped, as far as the wire extensions go, I used a kit from NAMZ Custom Cycle. Once you pull the wires out of the connectors, these simply plug into the existing wires and then back into the connectors. Many people use these, its much easier than soldering in your own extensions. Not sure how you want to do it.

ALSO, I went from the drag bars to 14" Wild 1 Oulawz. I was able to pull the stock wires through the bars and then add the extensions on. That way you're not pulling on the extensions possibly pulling them apart and creating a short inside the bars.

Not sure what year your Train is. The link is for the '07 up but obviously they have them for all the model years.
