Default a new fatty

Well as I was discussing in a previous thread I had been thinking of a FB since having sold my Street Glide this past summer.

So Friday I go to Texas Harley Davidson (Bedford) to look at a used 2012 FB they were selling ($16,500). The used one had a windshield and backrest but other then that it was stock. Long story short, 4 hours later I walk out with a brand new (2013) FB. They matched the price of the used bike, and waived all the extra BS that dealers add (freight, setup, etc). So actually got the bike for under MSRP. All I did was add the windshield as the pipes and backrest I wanted was close to $2000.00 (P/L). But after taking the wife around the block this evening with no backrest, she said I'm getting one, sooner rather then later.

I do have a local bike shop near me and will be paying them a visit this week for said backrest and pipes. I figure, through him, it'll be closer to $1500 then $2000.00.

One question however in regards to the backrest. The parts guy at HD said that on the FB, it's required to relocate the rear turn signals. WTF is that all about?

I'll try and post a few pics here in the next day or day, but just wanted to say thanks for all the advice, etc in the previous thread.

One other quick thing, and I know it's rather subjective but here goes. On my two previous bike (Road King and Street Glide) I have V&H pipes. Any reason NOT to go with them on the FB?

You can find the information regarding the backrest by searching through this thread.

A simple modification to the sideplates and you won't have to relocate the turn signals. Take about 1/8" off the back edge, touch up the edge with a little paint and you'll be all set!

No reason not to go with V&H if that's what you like, unless you want to be different.

Thumbs up

I am very interested in hearing how you like your new Fat boy coming from the Street Glide. I sold my Street Glide last year as well and Im considering buying a softail. Appreciate all your feedback and congrats on your new ride.

My Fatty is a '10, and the turn signals were not relocated when the back rest was added, and I don't think anything on the frame/suspension has changed in those years, but I could be wrong. Are you looking at standard mount or quick release?

And of course......

I had the dealership install a quick release backrest and they did the turn signal relocation at the same time.

I have an 05, hardly a new bike but I put a new seat on last year and added a backrest, no need to relocate my rear turn signals. Now, if you put bags on that may be a different story.

Welcome to the Fatclub!! I got V&H Big Shot Staggered... love them!

For the backrest question, no reason to do the relocation kit unless you go with the quick-release backrest. The quick-release mechanism gets in the way of the turn signals. I would have liked to go with the quick-release, but that relocation kit makes the rears go from sleek swept back to retarded old-school simple.

There's a thread on here somewhere where a guy ground off some notches to the non-quick-release so it's just a 2 minute job to get it off... I did that recently and it was real easy with a cut-off grinder.
