Default EarthX Batteries

For anyone thinking about a new lithium battery for their ride, consider EarthX. I just installed this battery in my wifes XL

The difference in size and weight is unreal. Old battery=7lbs, new battery >1lb

You can see for yourself the size difference. If you have a tuner or other electrical equipment that you can't find a space for, this could save the headache of custom install for you.

It does come with foam strips to make up the size difference if needed as well.

The old battery when new and fully charged would struggle to start the bike when hot. This thing right out of the box cranks it with ease, even hot.

Lets see what the next year or two brings.

Cool! How much is it? Where did you get it? That could solve all kinds of packaging problems.

I bought it directly from EathX online. I don't see them as a sponsor here so I don't like adding links but they are easy to find.

The XL battery was around $220 shipped and there are two that would work for our bikes. Both the same size as this, one is a 340 crank and the other is above 400. The bigger of the two is expensive at $340 or so, but for the added power it provides while still being smaller, I just ordered mine.

What is the projected battery life, how does it compare with stock?

I thought lithium batteries required a special charger? I thought I read a regular charger would smoke one. Did I read wrong?

I am not a lipo battery expert but I was thinking the same thing. I don't think a battery tender would work on them.

I dont know about the earthx brand but the owner of our HD shop and a parts guy both had lith batts. In a 1.5yr span Parts guy went through 3,owner 2. Both are back to reg batts. Not sure if that had to do with the way they are charged,but changed my mind on the one I was going to buy.

Nope, this one takes a standard 2-15 amp charger, although, they say that it does not need, nor should you charge it unless it is depleted. They boast that you can leave your bike for 6 months with it connected and not need to leave it on a charger.

I don't know if this is true yet, nor will I ever plan on leaving my bike for 6 months, but I can tell you that after two days with this thing installed, the bike starts better than it has for the 3 years that she owned it. Even hot it spins that thing over like the plugs are out of it.

From their site:
Our batteries are designed to be a drop-in replacement of a standard 12 volt lead-acid battery, so no special or expensive charger is required. Our batteries will work with any vehicle charging system and “modern” lead-acid battery chargers, thanks to our built-in battery management system. And our batteries are an exceptional value given the fact they last years longer than a lead-acid battery.

There is a lot of talk about lithium batteries these days, but not all lithium batteries are equal. There are dozens of different types of chemistry used in lithium batteries. Our batteries use cells made of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry that was developed in the U.S.A. This chemistry is the highest performance and safest on the market today.

Lithium batteries are fundamentally different than lead-acid batteries. The lithium cells inside the 12V battery need electronics to monitor and balance the voltage/charge of the individual cells. Other companies sell a balancing charger, which you have to plugin periodically to “top off” and balance the cells. Inside every one of our batteries is a microprocessor Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors the charge level of each cell and balances the charge when needed, protecting the cells from overcharge or over-discharge. What this means for you is more starting power, longer battery life, and the safest lithium motorsport battery on the market. All types of lithium batteries (not just ours) require a “BMS” that monitors and balances the cell charge.

The key advantages of our lithium battery over lead acid batteries are;

Light-weight — 70-80% less weight
Long Service Life — Up to 4000 charge / discharge cycles (~3-8 years), over 4 times the life of a lead-acid battery
Longer Storage Life – due to extremely low self-discharge rate, no need for charging in the off-season

Environmentally Friendly — non-toxic, non-contaminating, lead free and no hazardous materials
Wide Operating Temperature Range (-30 C–+60C) — lithium batteries are dry cell technology and will not freeze
Fast Charge — can be fully charged in less than a half hour
Maintenance Free
No Special Mounting Direction
Safety and Reliability — internal cells are continually monitored by an integrated battery management system
The key advantages of our lithium batteries over competitors lithium batteries;

All our products are engineered in the USA
We use American battery technology, the most advanced lithium battery technology in the world
Our batteries are assembled in the USA with US and foreign components.
Built-in battery management system for maximum performance and longest life — no expensive balancing charger needed.
Flexible battery connection — our batteries can be used in either left or right side polarity applications. You also have the option to connect the battery leads directly to your vehicle.
Integrity – our battery specifications are accurate. We won’t tell you our battery has 500CCA when it does not. We test all our batteries to industry standards (SAE, UL, CE).
