evening fellas, i had an engine warning lite come on this week on my 2004 fxstdi. Ok no biggey, check codes came back as po505 injector. my future son in law works at a dealership. he called me and gave me the bad news, which i already planned on cam tensioners, yup they be junk. What i wasnt prepared for was the np203 cams he said the cam lobes are worn.
So i guess my question is what is a good torquey cam? honestly i am happy with the 203's but if i gotta spend some coin i would like opinions on what others have to go off of.
Also would i be better off going with gear drive cams? what is the consensus on the SE oil pump? My S-I-L didnt have all the info as to whats needed or pricing yet he will call me tomorrow a.m. with those details. So any help would be appreciated, as my time to decide is short and the weather in iowa is finally coming around and i want my bike back lol.
the background on my deuce is this. its a 04 fxstdi with 51K, that at 22K a 95" big bore was done by previous owner.np203 cams, power commander III, vance and hines staggered short shots.
If they are shot I would go with the SE upgrade on the cam plate and oil pump. I have the SE 211 cams and they fit my style of riding just perfect. Good luck and keep us updated.
ok i gotta ask what your style of riding is? i would say my style of riding is aggressive at times, while on the highways i am more subdued enjoying the 50 mile ride to work, but when buddies around we ride hard and fast.
On an '04, crank runout is a 50/50 proposition, so that will need to be checked to see if you can run gear drive cams. Should be .003 or less. I'm running Andrews 37 cams with SE upgrade plate and pump in a 98" '04 Standard. A great all around cam. I ride aggressively and this cam suits me just fine. I can cruise along easily or hit the throttle and have all the power I need. The upgrade pump is worth every penny.
Actually, by looking at the various manufacturer's advertised specs and performance windows. The way I saw it, most of my riding is done between 2000 and 5000 rpm and this one is supposed to produce the best power from 2200 on up. I also knew I was going to go with a big bore kit at around 9.8/10-1 compression to suit the cams which I did this past Feb. I ran them for a year before I did the BB kit and they were a little lazy on the low end but far better than the stockers and was really happy with them. As a bonus, they have a real nice lopey idle. About as potato as I've heard from a twin cam.
thanks QC, I went to the andrews page and right now, i am looking at the tw55, in comparing specs the SE211 is somewhat comparable. but all are way more radical than the 203's i have now. i hope someone else will chime in and offer more suggestions/help.
thanks i do appreciate it, i have learned alot from this forum. Including about the cam tensioners as this is my 1st harley so i am very grateful to those that help those of us late comers.
