Default Drilling Painted Fender ..

Ok guys..
We have a situation with the build, I did buy from the forum a fatboy rear fender, and assumed (wrong for me) that it would fit straight up on my struts and FXST rear fenders.

I have the struts from a NightTrain.

I also have relocation kit installed for my rear turn signals which puts them further back for the installation of quick release docks.

Problem is the rear fender does not have that hole drilled and it is painted now.

My Indy did install it but he did remove some parts of the rear strut as a work around, it looks really bad, and I will definitely replace those struts.

Question is.. would it be possible to drill that hole for the rear turn signal in the painted fender without any problems ? My Indy shied away from that.

I had to to drill four holes in my painted shadetree fender. I used blue painters tape and carefully drilled through that. It is nerve racking but you can do it. I ran a pilot hole first.

Like Milty said, but you'll have to treat the raw metal you've now created.

To be safe from chipping the paint, I'd probably drill a hole which is way undersized, and then enlarge it to final size with a round file, or a die grinder (a Dremel, if that's what you have). If you hand file, cut from the painted outside surface inward, so the teeth on the file will push the paint in the direction of the metal backing. If you go the other direction, there's a slight chance the teeth could pull the paint loose.

I would use duct tape and drill through that. I would also start out with a very tiny drill bit at first though and slowly work your way up the the size hole needed. Good luck Dude and keep us posted.

I'd be a little concerned about "Duct" tape taking the paint with it when pulling it off.
