I would look into getting rid of the stock shift rod.
The one that comes from the factory sucks and looks like crap to boot.
Even the cheap (for Harley) polished Stainless Steel replacement works and looks 100% better.

I have one on order (I found out that they also made covers to go over the factory installed ones as well).

Only problem with the covers is that they don't do anything to fix the crappy ends.
At least the SS version has nice Hyme ends that are much smoother and less subject to road dirt jamming them up.
