Ok, i am riding down a nice country rd doing about 55 and i hear something fall off my bike and hit the road.I look down i see my chrome ac cover is gone. I pull over and look for it,no luck,I guess i am lucky i didnt step on a snake, lots of them down here in sc. i am going to replace it with a willie g cover. It had hex screws in it,should i use a lock washer too?
Had a deal like that happen to me. Heard this ping and something hit my leg. Stopped and looked around but didn't see anything missing. Got home and started looking a little more serious. One of the fins on the head had broke off. They were fresh from the head porter and he must have had greasy fingers. They had tried to tig it back on but it didn't work. Still works and I'm not much of a fashion plate anyway.
When I wash the bikes, it's more than just a cleaning. It's a time to look at it, inspect parts, check condition of theings. I look for evidence of any leaks and seeps, gently handle oil and air lines, covers, etc. Check air pressures, belt deflection and condition, tread depth. When I am done I have confidence I can take it out all day and not have something fall off or leak all over. If it's been a while since washing, I'll check tire pressures before going out. Tires are expensive, replacing a PITA, and this gives me comfort they will last.

Doesn't take long to do it.
I looked around and found a PDF copy of the MSF's "T-CLOCK Pre-Ride Inspection Checklist", which I now keep in the garage.
I was getting lazy and always just wanted to jump on and ride... bad habit.
