Default pre90 trans vs post90 trans...whats the difference?

I have an 86 softail project that I am slowing putting together. It came with a shovelhead trans which wasn't really going to work for this project. I traded it for an evo trans that was someones spare for their fatboy.

As I was researching, there is a difference be transmissions made before 1990 and those after 1990. Whats the difference. Will a newer trans work at all with an older softail?

I think you may be confused. Let me rephrase.

I have an 86 softail......frame and (evo)motor.

I think I have a newer softail transmission.

Will the newer softail transmission work on my older softail?

Yeah sorry I forgot Evo's came out around 84 I think, thinking you had a Shovel, I wouldn't think there'd be a problem, but the guys on the Evo forum would know for sure.
