Default A Thread About SOFTAIL Wheels...!

Hey Gang,

Yesterday I posted a thread in this section of the forums discussing the possibility of swapping out the wheels on a Crossbones for those of a Softail Slim. Thanks to the ever vigilant moderators and their need to categorize everything the thread got moved to some Trades and Freebies section where it's the only thread and so I'm sure no one will ever see it. So here I am again, ever so carefully wording my post so that hopefully it enjoys a longer life than the first.

Here is the gist of my original post...

"Basically, I want to swap out my rear 200 for something like that of the Slim. I think I can give my Bones a much more authentic old school look with the slimmer tire. After looking at current 2008-2013 models of Sotails and Dynas, I figured that the rear wheel of the Slim is what would swap properly. The only issue I see is that the Slim has a blacked out hub and my Bones has polished hubs. I don't want one of each on my Bones so I would either need to swap both wheels or look at other options. One that would work is using the rear wheel of a Dyna Street Bob which matches perfectly but it is only a 160 so it is still a little beefier than I would like."

So more to the point; does anyone have any insight into the possibility that these wheels would swap? I've looked into it at the dealerships and I can't see any reason it wouldn't work but thought maybe someone would chime in who has tried it. I know of at least one person on here who swapped for the rear Dyna wheel but the only one I have found that would work as far as fit and match to the front Xbones wheel is still a 160 which I think wouldn't give me the look I am after.

My next question is whether or not any of you Slim owners have gone the way of a bigger rear tire such as a 200 and what if any issues did you run into?

I realize that fender and strut swapping would be required after the fact but that is my aim in the first place. I want to run a narrower tire which will allow me the use of the narrower rear end components, all of which to me lend more to that old school feel that I want to get out of my Bones.

Any photos of possible examples would be greatly appreciated.

Skeez

Thanks for the reply. Although I my aim would be to swap rims with someone who owns a Slim in order to avoid having to buy anything.

That said, I actually have a spare Crossbones rear rim that I may consider selling so maybe you can put me in touch with whoever is looking for one to see what they are willing to pay for it. It is the rim only and needs a right side bearing. The reason I have it is because I was in an accident some time ago and some time later I felt something odd when I rode my bike. I called the insurance company and told them about it and they assumed that the rear wheel must have gotten damaged and it was missed during the repairs so they bought me a new one. Turns out all that was wrong was that one of my bearings had gone out. Once the Harley shopped swapped it out for the new one I kept the original just in case I ever needed it since there is nothing actually wrong with the rim.

Here's photos of a Crossbones rear wheel that I have and would be willing to trade for a narrow rear wheel.

The wheel itself should bolt right up. Keep in mind the slim rear is a 16" wheel and your Crossbones has a 17" wheel stock. Also a Blackline Rear wheel would be the same except for the smooth rim. For that matter, you could use a Heritage or Deluxe rear wheel and just have the rim itself powder coated to match your front.

Afternoon, if you dont have much luck let me know and I am happy to swap you my rear wheel from my 13 Slim. Only issue is I live in Chile so there will be some shipping but it wont be too much and I am guessing a lot less than buying a new rim. You can actually have the wheel complete.

Thanks for the info. I actually wasn't aware that a rear Slim wheel was only a 16 inch. I guess that really wouldn't be an issue as long as it looks good on my scoot and seeing as how I think the Slim looks great in regards to wheel size.

I've actually had several Blackline owners already offer a trade but not only am I not fond of the smooth rim, it would leave me with a set of miss matched wheels.

I guess I need to look into the cost of having a stick Heritage or Deluxe wheel disassembled and reassembled. I know I can get the powder coating for a song from my regular guy.

The more I think about it, the more viable and option this seems given that I think a stock rim from one of those two models can be had pretty reasonably.

Thanks again.

Chile? Well I guess for starters I will need to get an idea on shipping. Can you send me your postal code so I can give that to the carrier and get an accurate estimate.

What do you mean when you say you would trade for a complete wheel?

Okay since this is a softail wheel thread does anyone know if the crossbones rim is a direct swap for the 200mm FXST?
