Default Fork Disassembly

I am working on a 92 Fat Boy.

I am debating whether to replace a broken fork slide cover myself or take it to the shop. I am no type of mechanic, but have recently made a decision to start wrenching on my own stuff. I successfully changed the suspension on my Jeep with the help of a buddy. He is no longer here. I have a Haynes manual. I have tools and am willing to buy what I dont have in order to grow my tool set.

Here is my dilemma. Being an American in Germany and with all of my mechanic buddies having PCSed I am without the technical or verbal knowledge to run to the local parts house and pick up simple parts. As I look over the job in the manual, I see locking nuts and seals that need to be replaced as well as the normal grease and such. The nearest HD place is 40 minutes away. The local parts house usually has to order the part and it comes in the next day.

Any one who has experience with front fork work- Is there a basic list of stuff I should purchase or could I run into enough problems to just take it in to the shop? I would like to have this bike back by the 4th for a show.

You'll need a 1 3/8 socket for the top bolthttps://www.denniskirk.com/motion-pro/fork-cap-socket.p282291.prd/282291.sku, though a good adjustable and some tape to protect the chrome will work. A long 6MM Allen wrench for the bolts at the bottom, http://www.sears.com/gearwrench-3-8i...17000P?prdNo=8and a seal install toolhttps://www.denniskirk.com/motion-pro/41mm-ringer-fork-seal-driver.p283338.prd/283338.sku or a piece of PCV pipe that you have to modify to work to install the seals.
The links are just to give you an idea of what you're looking for. Good luck!
