Exclamation '87 Softail clutch issue

My wifes bike has been a problem child since we met. This time it is the clutch. It feels like it isn't properly disengaging. I can "give 'er the onion" and all it'll do is rev up and slowly speed up. Kinda feels like it's stuck in the friction zone and won't fully disengage. We have a ride coming up next weekend and would like to have it up and running ASAP... any ideas?

adj the clutch in the prmary and then the cable, may need new plates if it's been slipping for a while

Give `er the onion??

Your description is contradictory, you say it is not disengaging, but say all it will do is rev up and the bike slowly accelerates.

From your description it sounds as if the clutch will not fully engage.

How many miles on the clutch plates and discs?

It could be time for new friction plates and steel discs (as Blk and Chrome said).

You must follow the service manual and adjust the clutch and the cable.

You may need to disassemble the clutch, inspect the plates and discs, and possibly re position the pressure plate (A or B position).

This can be done with the clutch hub and shell still installed.

No special tools needed for this job, the pressure plate is held on by 4 bolts.

plates and disks only have 1500 miles on them and tore it all apart to find that there was a stretched and broken bolt holding the adjuster plate on. now just trying to remove the transmission mainshaft nut to take the clutch hub to a machinist.
