I installed my own apes and cables earlier this year. Cables from lachoppers.com and wiring extensions from namz. I had never done it, and I have no manual. Take your time, and check for youtube videos for pointers; there are some good informational clips on there. Good luck

Do a search in the forum for Ape install and you will find alot of good how to threads. Worked for me.

Good luck and take your time ----it isn't that bad. Always good to have a manual handy. I used HCC 16 in kit with wires and cables without any issues. See sig

Do not cut and splice the wiring for the controls on the 2011! Namz has plug and play extensions or you can get them from Harley, If you cut them you can mess up the integrated wiring system....

I posted up a thread with pics and a few tips; check it out.

Food for thought. I went with the 14", 1.5" Carlini Gangster apes with their 1 1/2" tall bra riser. Carlini runs a little tall too. I originally went with the 16" Gangsters but they looked way too tall for me. I switched them with the 14" and I love them. Consider going with everything run internally through the bars, including the Exile internal throttle setup. I did and it looks SO clean up font. I like this set up so much I can't ever see me going without apes again. Good luck and keep us posted.

I have a 2013 Deluxe. I retained the stock pullback riser but swapped out the bushings for urethane. Do NOT leave the rubber bushings in. I went with Burly 16" apes and used their cable kit. Burly takes their measurements off a 2 inch riser so when I ordered mine I went with the 18 inch cable kit. I used a 12 inch HD wiring harness but still had to solder the handlebar end of the harness because the plug wouldn't fit into the holes in the bars.

I don't like internal cables. I prefer the old-school look of the cables.

I'd recommend a shop manual because you need to remove the exhaust and you have to remove the clutch cable cover on the transmission to replace the clutch cable. My HD dealership quoted me 8 hours to install. I did it on my own in 9 hours. Also, you have to disconnect the cross over on the tank and lift it to get to the harnesses. I never enter the garage without my manual. If you plan on changing the exhaust, it's a good time to tackle that job as well since you'll have them off. When I swapped mine out I did it without taking off the exhaust. It would have saved me time just to remove it.

Yikes. I've just been pricing up everything I need to install apes on my bike. The main issue is getting hold of nice looking bars in the UK. I really like the Alloy Art TSB171, but I can't seem to find any (reasonable) way of getting them to the UK. I quite like the LA Choppers "twin peaks", but once you add on delivery, tax etc. they are around $320 the UK. And they narrow so I'd need replacement risers.

But it doesn't stop there. If I got the LA Choppers cable kit, then I'd be looking at an additional $560 for the cables (to be delivered) alone! Because of the postage costs, I don't think it makes sense to order the NAMZ from the US. I might as well buy the HD ones (It looks like 69200034 and 72137-03 are the ones I need?) locally. Then there's all the little things like replacement transmission gasket, oil, etc. etc.

Now, it also sounds like a massive amount of work, so I thought I'd get a quote from the local dealer for fitting (assuming that I bought the Harley Fat Apes instead) to see if it was really worthwhile attempting it myself. They want the equivalent of $660 labour on top, so that's out of the question.

So a few questions:

Are people really paying this kind of money? Is there a cheaper route?

What do people think of the LA Choppers "twin peaks" versus mitered tree huggers versus Carlini gangsters versus flying apes versus Harley Fat Apes?

I've got a lot to look into if I consider doing the work myself, but from the last post, what is the purpose of removing the exhaust?

I live in the US and I spent well over $700 USD for my Burly setup. When you start looking at apes you think, "$300 ain't bad for bars." Then you realize you need cables, wiring, gaskets, new trans fluid... it adds up QUICK!

I always go with 1" bars except when I did my flhx.... I did 16s on 1 " risers on my old night train and 18" on 9" risers on my springer and just did 18" on 1" risers on my shovel..... The bars were $90, cables were about 100 and since it was an oldy I put new wire and switching for 40. I'm not really sure about the wiring but my Harley stealership told me last week when I had to look into puttin apes on a 13 streetbob and they told me there was a certain kind of wire they use and all they do is cut and solder the wires....but do they have drag specialties there?
Ya have to take exhaust off so you can take the trans side cover to put the new clutch cable in

Bro...go with the LA Choppers Tree Hugger apes...then you dont have to worry about risers! I did the install myself...my recommendation...go with the Namz wiring kit...but do the soldering...not the quick connect...the connections on mine made the connection point bulky and a pain in the a$$ to pull through the bars...I finally got frustrated, pulled the wires back out, cut out the connectors and just soldered the wires...went through easy as pie after!
