I just bought an '01 Fatboy that only had 2,400 miles on it. After a week of running I'm having some major tank/fuel issues. After opening up the tank my mechanic found that my fuel filter was completely gone/disintegrated and the outer casing of the fuel pump was crumbling off and filling the tank with debris. Those parts clearly need to be replaced. No brainer.
The problem is this: The tank also a place where the liner has started to bubble up. Its about the size of a deck of cards. The liner hasn't come off yet. It's just bubbled - with no sign of rust...yet.
Here are my options as I see them:
A. the mechanic recommends sending the tank out of state to someone who will get the old liner off with toxic chemicals not allowed in California, then reline the tank and guarantee no damage to the paint.
2-3 weeks and $500.
B. There is local guy who will sandblast off the old liner and reline the tank but can't guarantee that the paint won't be messed up in the process.
1 week and $250
C. I can do nothing and wait until the liner starts to come off and then patch it. And possibly even do that work my self. But, I'm not sure how I'll know if the liner is coming off and there is rust without re-opening up the tank again.
What would you do if it was your bike? How big a problem is the liner flaking off? How fast will it start to rust. Is patching a viable fix?
I bought a tank and fender for my '05 last year off EBAY (I was considering a new direction for my bike but didn't want to paint over the orange tins). The liner in the tank is peeling/bubbling. After some research... the tank went back in the box and when I'm home for the winter, it's gonna get cut in half and made into two clocks. For the price to buy a replacement tank... I wouldn't even screw with it. Your budget may vary however.
my tank liner is shot as well. I may flush it out, but I'm
Not going to reline it. Im just going to top it off with gas
Regularly to prevent rust. My 1990 had a tank that wasn't
Lined and i.never had a prob with rust.
