Default V&H Quiet Baffles

Well tonight's challenge on my new (to me) 2004 FatBoy was to install quiet baffles in the LongShots. Unfortunately one of the allen head screws holding the OEM baffle in had been rounded out apparently during installation. So much for that project. Guess the quiet baffles will be going back to Dennis Kirk this weekend. There's only about 2" of room between the allen head screw and the frame. No clue how to take out that screw as is. Then again, I've heard from some folks that the quiet baffles really don't tone the noise down much at all.

Just take the pipe loose at the bracket, you can take the screw out with vice grips. The Quiet Baffles are great, they take out the highs and just leave a mellow rumble.

If the head of the machine screw is round, can you get small visegrips to grip it? Penetrating oil will make it easier. Otherwise, pull the pipe and drill it out.

Thanks for a couple options; I won't be so quick to send them back. I'd really like to install the quiet baffles. Will look at the vice grip with penetrant approach first.

Smile Rivets, screws, same same...

A couple of days ago I finished removing the baffles from my muffler. They were riveted in. I just took a small chisel and hammer and cut them off. It was a snap. I did not put a scratch on the muffler. This should be no different that your baffles. Try that.

Generally speaking, getting the screw out, be it stripped, rounded, etc., is the easy part. Getting the old baffles out is the hard part. Give them a good shot of PB Blaster or WD 40 and let sit overnight. And then patience, patience and patience to break the baffles free and pull them out. If you run into this, do a search, lots of good suggestions on how to remove them.

I did the same thing when I was installing my Big City Thunder Quality Quiet baffles. I went with them because my Vance and Hines Quiet Baffles came apart due to poor tack welds causing an annoying hard to find rattle for a couple of months. What I ended up doing was taking a dremel with a cutting wheel and just kind of grinding the screw head down. It ate into the pipe just a bit but I had to drill a new hole further up the pipe for the new baffles anyways. You could try something similar if the other methods don't work. Just in your case drill the new hole 180 from the original one. The button head screw will fit fine under the heat shields, just make sure that the screw isn't going to be underneath the heat shields clamps.

Here are some other idea's. Loosen pipe to gain access. Take a torx bit that is slightly larger then the rounded allen hole. Firmly hammer the torx bit into stripped hole. This will "impact" the sripped bolt to help loosen it and also set the torx bit to get it to grip and allow you to turn it.
