Default Transmission issue

On my way back from Sturgis my shifter started acting up. When I change gears my shifter doesn't pop back to be engage in the next gear. I have to manually move the shifter up or down about 1/2 an inch for the shifter to engaged to change gears. Btw 6 speed with only 9,000 miles.

Pretty common. The shaft on the front shifter is dirty/corroded. Take it apart, clean the shaft and lube it.

The dealer told me they would most likely have to tear down the entire transmission. I truly hope they are wrong. I will try your suggestion. Thank you. Has anyone else experienced this ?

Like Ivory Soap, there's a 99 and 44/100th percent chance that Gman has the answer!

Easy check is to remove the rod from the shift lever at the trans and see how well the foot lever works. If it is real stiff pull it and clean and grease the bushing. If it is loose and free then the trans is the issue.

Another vote for clean and lube the linkage as Gman said. While not impossible for it to fail, the tranny in these are a lot like the old Muncie 4-speed--they just last. Please let us know what the fix was.
