I think the first Softail was in 1984, not 1884.

looks like a rigid frame to me.. the first softail was in early 80's, a guy took a i believe 1979 FLH with a 4 speed frame. modified it and made a custom swingarm to hide the shocks to make it look like a rigid. HD saw the bike at a rally and loved it, so they bought the rites and started selling them in 1984. my facts and dates might be a little off, but that is basically the story i have always heard.i originally read it in an easyrider magazine from back in the day.

wikipedia has another story about some designer designing softail frames in the early 70's and trying to sell the design to HD for several years till till they bought it. it seams nothing related with HD is set in stone and is more legend then reality.
