hi guys, i have an opportunity to buy an 88 sotfail with 43k kils for a very good price... (been a 883 sportster guy since 92) always wanted a softail...
I would like your opinion on that bike, it's stock, single caliper brakes, 4 speed, and has a lot of mileage... but it's my entry ticket into big twin territory...
I would love real life experience commentaries, especially on the 4 speed thing...
So, it'll put a little buzz in your hands...buy it, you'll enjoy it. Everyone thinks new is the only way to go. Nothing wrong with those old evo's. Hell, I'm thinking about converting a 96-98 dyna, toa shovel. I know you can't make the HP you can with the new TC's, but you gotta love the sound of a shovel. Thinking an S&S might be the way to go.
My dad has an '85 Softail Custom. It has the 4-speed tranny and will vibrate the chrome off your......uhhh....chrome parts. He wouldn't trade it for the world! If it is in good mechanical order, I say get it.

I would grab the thing. Worst case is that next winter if after a summer of riding ityour not happy with the 4 speed. All you'll need istoget hold of a 5 in a 4 kit from Baker or Jims.
Still a lot cheaper than a new bike and its old enough to be exempt from most, if not all of the emissions regulations (over here anyway). So you can do whatever you like to the engine, and EVO's have LOTS of goodies for them. So parts of any kind are not going to be a problem for a long time to come.
I have a 85 FXST and you could.'t give me a new one. Sure they vibrate a little. SO what. My Friend has a 06 and i find it boring to ride compared to mine. I like to feel some of the HD rumble under my butt. And you will be unique, instead of looking like the cookie cutter new ones.Take care of it and it will go beyond 100,000 miles easily. Check out my photos, The old ones have character.
Agree with HD 7585! I have a 98 FXSTC and I am VERY happy with it. While I might take trade on an TC 88B, my dependable EVOis totally customized and I'd hate to give up all of the bling for a little smoother ride.
